It's Awards Season as the SAGs are announced!
Well, the 19th annual SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards were announced this morning. Generally, this is a good indicator of the potential Academy Award nominations and there were some shocking nominees as well as some very obvious missing nominations!
Now keep in mind - these are actor/actresses voted for each other's performances. So rather than vote on the 'best picture', they actually vote on the CAST of the best picture - make sense?
The awards will be handed out on January 27th, normally it is live on TNT and I imagine this year will be no different! Here are this year's nominees along with a comment or two from your's truly! Remember - click on the title or actor for a link to a trailer!
Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role
- Bradley Cooper / Pat - "Silver Linings Playbook"
- Daniel Day-Lewis / Abraham Lincoln - "Lincoln"
- John Hawkes / Mark - "The Sessions"
- Hugh Jackman / Jean Valjean - "Les Misérables"
- Denzel Washington / Whip Whitaker - "Flight"
This is going to be a tough race; after all you have Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington on the same list, but at the end of the day John Hawkes very powerful performance in "The Sessions" may just come out on top.
- Jessica Chastain / Maya - "Zero Dark Thirty"
- Marion Cotillard / Stephanie - "Rust And Bone"
- Jennifer Lawrence / Tiffany - "Silver Linings Playbook"
- Helen Mirren / Alma Reville - "Hitchcock"
- Naomi Watts / Maria - "The Impossible"
While I thought the performance from Jennifer Lawrence cemented her credibility as an actress; it is the performance of Jessica Chastain that will win the day. Now, the favorite here may be Helen Mirren, if only for the snub of Anthony Hopkins!
Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Supporting Role
- Alan Arkin / Lester Siegel - "Argo"
- Javier Bardem / Silva - "Skyfall"
- Robert De Niro / Pat, Sr. - "Silver Linings Playbook"
- Philip Seymour Hoffman / Lancaster Dodd - "The Master"
- Tommy Lee Jones / Thaddeus Stevens - "Lincoln"
With Javier Bardem doing such a good job in "Skyfall", he seems to be the popular pick, but I wouldn't count out De Niro or Arkin just yet! This race will be a close one, I am personally rooting for De Niro!
Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role
- Sally Field / Mary Todd Lincoln - "Lincoln"
- Anne Hathaway / Fantine - "Les Misérables"
- Helen Hunt / Cheryl - "The Sessions"
- Nicole Kidman / Charlotte Bless - "The Paperboy"
- Maggie Smith / Muriel Donnelly - "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"
Another tough list! Helen Hunt gave a brave and powerful performance but Anne Hathaway is stunning in "Le Mis". Watch for old favorite Maggie Smith to pull ahead though.
Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture
- Argo (Warner Bros. Pictures)
- Ben Affleck / Tony Mendez, Alan Arkin / Lester Siegel, Kerry Bishé / Kathy Stafford, Kyle Chandler / Hamilton Jordan, Rory Cochrane / Lee Schatz, Bryan Cranston / Jack O’donnell, Christopher Denham / Mark Lijek, Tate Donovan / Bob Anders, Clea Duvall / Cora Lijek, Victor Garber / Ken Taylor, John Goodman / John Chambers, Scoot Mcnairy / Joe Stafford, Chris Messina / Malinov

- Lincoln (Touchstone Pictures)
- Daniel Day-lewis / Abraham Lincoln, Sally Field / Mary Todd Lincoln, Joseph Gordon-levitt / Robert Todd Lincoln, Hal Holbrook / Preston Blair, Tommy Lee Jones / Thaddeus Stevens, James Spader / W.N. Bilbo, David Strathairn / William Seward
- Silver Linings Playbook (The Weinstein Company)
- Bradley Cooper / Pat, Robert De Niro / Pat, Sr., Anupam Kher / Dr. Cliff Patel, Jennifer Lawrence / Tiffany, Chris Tucker / Danny, Jacki Weaver / Dolores
While I would love 'Argo' to take the prize here, I have a feeling it is going to come down to 'Lincoln' or 'Les Misérables' - either for the sheer effort it took to make both films. Daniel Day-Lewis practically channels Abe Lincoln and the entire cast of 'Les Misérables' sang their parts live (as it was filmed, as opposed to dubbing with a sound studio). Look to 'Les Misérables' to take the prize here!
Now the SAGs also cover TV - sadly I do not here (at least at this point). As the other awards start to announce - I will post them here as well! Let me know what you think!
